What is Functional Training? – Functional Training vs Performance Training – What Are Athletic Foot Positions?
What is functional training, and how does it differ from performance training? Performance coach Robb Rogers discusses the differences and similarities in this presentation that covers all ages and performance levels. Work capacity to landings, foot position to stances, there’s a lot of material in this short lecture.
“Performance training means actually training to improve a quality to assist in achieving an overall goal in speed, power, strength or injury prevention. In these cases, it’s something like having to get more explosive, becoming more elastic, needing more strength in the upper body in order to play a game and more fitness in order to be able to play at the same quality.” ~Robb Rogers

Christopher Bathke –
Robb has years of experience training all levels of people, and it shows. In this lecture he lays out aspects of physical performance (endurance, power etc…) and how that relates to functional training. His illustration of training concepts as relates to movement variations in the gym and how that relates to performance is quite good. However, in order to best utilize this info one should have a good grasp on the fundamental exercises and how those would fit into programming. All in all highly recommended.
