Thomas Plummer: Please, Stop Obsessing

This article is an excerpt from The Soul of a Trainer

Please, stop obsessing about what you are going to do with the rest of your life.

We get so overly worried about the last step of our lives, we end up not having a life at all.

Statistically, most of you under 50 could live well into your 90s and beyond.

Do you really think a 30-year-old person has to know now, today, what he wants to do for the next 60 years of his life?

Do you think anyone who has 60 years in front of her has to stick with one career, one business, one place to live, and according to the numbers, will stick with one person, since people getting married in their 20s have an over-50-percent chance of changing the significant person?

Stop worrying about the last step in life. Stop worrying about what you are going to do with your life.

Stop going crazy agonizing on why you are here and what you are supposed to be doing. Simply go out and live. Don’t obsess about the last step; focus everything on the next step.

How do you want to spend the next three to five years of your life?

You want to start a business?
Then start one and sell it in a few years to make enough money for five years of traveling.
A business isn’t forever.

Opening a business is just a step to move your life ahead and give you a chance to learn and grow, doing something new while creating wealth.

Want to change careers? Do something new for a while and give it a chance. A new job or career isn’t forever. New beginnings can just be a short two- or three-year bus ride until you get off at the next destination.

Whatever you are doing now, never get trapped by the “forever” trap. Life is a series of steps forward. The steps do not have to be sequential. The steps do not have to make sense to your parents or friends.

What you are doing next does not have to be forever and, realistically, seldom is.

The goal of a life well lived is kicking back on the front porch when you are 90, telling the grandkids, “Yeah, I tried that too, and it was a crazy time in my life. Never thought I would take a year off and just ride the trains of Europe, but it just seemed like the right thing to do at that time.”

Life is about experiences, adventures, pushing your limits into something new and exciting and about seeing where you fit into the world.

Life is about finding something new to challenge you to grow and expand your mind, things that blow you out of your little world that often becomes narrow and overly claustrophobic.

Life is about what is next.

You will live with more intensity, more passion and more depth if you worry about “next,” and give up thinking you have to know what you want to do forever.
