Mark Cheng: Movement is Just Like Money

Mark Cheng’s movement philosophy uses the analogy of money: Are you borrowing more movement than you have?

Movement is just like money.

You can certainly max out your credit cards to make a purchase, but in the long run, you’re going to have to pay that bill sooner or later.

When it comes to athletic performance, you can push past what your body is capable of, but you will pay the piper.

If you own all of the pre-requisites, if you own that inventory of movement or you have that solid balance in the bank, you can write bigger checks.

You can do more with your body and it’s still safe.

The thing we’re trying to work on here in doing these progressions and this Prehab-Rehab 101 series is to be able to give you that kind of thick inventory of movement. If your sport requires you to do a lot, but your abilities are only a little, you’re having to borrow the difference. You don’t have that buffer of movement.

If your sport requires you to do a lot and your abilities cover that and more, that’s a different thing. You have a comfortable buffer zone of movement.

This is what we’re trying to create for you. If you keep borrowing past your body’s current inventory of movement, you’ll likely run yourself into a compensatory mechanism, forcing your body to develop bad habits.

Just like with money, it’s not a good idea.
